We study the length of the region of local absolute instability of a jet as a function of the initial velocity profile, which is governed by two parameters. The first one is responsible for the position of the inflection point on the velocity profile, the second parameter is responsible for the jet shear layer thickness. We find the velocity profile for which the maximum length of the absolute instability region is attained. Lengthening of this region length provides favorable conditions for the global instability, which will yield faster transition to turbulence and enhanced mixing of the jet with ambient medium.
