Nanodiamonds are found to be a new effective sorbent material of organic/inorganic ions, biological molecules. It was shown that due to large specific surface, multi-functionality of surface groups and possibility of targeted modification of the surface, adsorption properties of nanodiamond (ND) particles exceed adsorption capacity of many carbon sorbents. It is very important to understand mechanisms of interactions between NDs and their environment in order to make targeted modifications of ND surface for increasing its adsorption efficiency and selectivity. This work presents the results of a study and comparative analysis of diamond-water coupling effects and interactions between NDs and biomacromolecules/ions in water suspensions of original and modified NDs using photon correlation, absorption, Raman and IR spectroscopies. The adsorption properties of original and modified NDs, and charcoal with respect to biomolecules pUC57 DNA and Lambda DNA and heavy metal ions Cu2+, Pb2+ and anions NO3-, CH3COO- were determined. The comparative analysis showed high sorbent effectivity of NDs modified by COOH groups. On the base of obtained results, the adsorption mechanisms are determined for every ion and biomolecule.
