Аннотация:50 years ago A.B. Migdal in his paper ''Quardrupole and dipole gamma-emission in nuclei'' introduced implicitly the concept of the dynamic collective model in nuclear physics and on the basis of this concept predicted the phenomenon of the giant dipole resonance in nuclei. In the intervening pears the theory of the giant resonance has had a great influence on the development toward the modern concepts of the nuclear dynamics. After a short historical review this paper traces the evolution of the conceptual aspects of our understanding of the nature of the giant resonances. Starting from their initial identification with the picture of the nucleus as a liquid drop this evolution led to their description within the framework of the independent particle model. After recognizing that these two seemingly opposite models yield striking similarities in their predictions attempts at bridging the gap between these models were made, leading finally to the demonstration of the equivalence of the description of the giant reasonance in both these versions of the nuclear dynamics.
