Аннотация:A new technique for determining of the standoff distance of the Earth's magnetopause is presented. The method based on magnetic field measurements at 5 minute resolution on board the GOES-6 and -7 spacecraft and Dst index. The technique have been verified by comparing the computed standoff distance with the distance calculated from an empirical ANN 3D-model of the dayside magnetopause. The excellent agreement was obtained. We conclude that this technique could become a useful tool in magnetospheric research, since it allows the size of the magnetosphere to be determined continuously (assuming magnetometers are flown at appropriate longitudes to obtain full-time coverage) and at high time resolution.
